Dr. Maureen Gowanlock grew up outside Halifax Nova Scotia. She received her Bachelor of Science at Dalhousie University in 1975 and then entered Dental School at Dalhousie graduating in 1979 receiving the Greatest Proficiency in Clinical Dentistry and Orthodontic Awards.
She entered the Canadian Dental Officer Training Program in 1975 and her first posting after graduation was Shearwater in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. At that time, she was one of only seven female military dentists in Canada. After her military commitment was finished, Dr. Gowanlock became a full-time faculty member of Dalhousie Dental School.
Dr. Gowanlock moved to Prince Edward Island and, with her husband, opened a dental practice in Hunter River in January 1988. It was a surprise and a great honour to discover she was the first woman dentist to practise on the Island.
In 2013, she gave up the business/ownership of a dental practice and became an associate dentist. She was very pleased to join Dr. Marla Peters and Dr. Jordan d'Eon in April 2015 and excited to share in the opening of Gateway Dental.
